Citizen Science: Franklin’s Ground Squirrel Observations

Franklin’s ground squirrel was once common in central Alberta; however, it has become increasingly rare over the years. The cause of the decline is not known. It cannot be listed as a threatened species until its abundance and distribution are better described.

To help address this information gap, Nature Alberta and researchers at MacEwan University are collaborating on a citizen science project focused on the Franklin’s ground squirrel.

Submit your observations of Franklin’s Ground Squirrels

If you spot Franklin’s ground squirrels, please submit your photos and observations through the iNaturalist project, which you can find through this link.

Do you have older observations that you would like to submit? If you have a photo then you can still submit to iNaturalist through the link above. But if you don’t have a photo, then you can submit your information through Nature Alberta’s website.
